My modeling portfolio

Is nonexistent…so instead I offer up these pics of my “chemo-face” at the end of day 9. The deep red areas are very painful, like a sunburn given to me by the devil himself. It hurts To move parts of my face or give whole facial expressions. The burning can be quite distracting and has me wondering what day 12 forward will look like. It’s all good…there are so many people going through so many worse things than I am right now. But this is my journey…I got this.

God bless,

-Ian

    1. Well, you’re still handsome! And you still have your face!
I just learned yesterday with my best friend that he has non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I am having a powwow with his two grown daughters tomorrow to help figure out the impact emotionally, financially and the physical logistics of all the responsibilities. Of course, I learned depression becomes a part of the cancer patient. And I’m vowing to give him a stress-free existence while he goes through the treatments. This great man is a retired Roseville high school English teacher and has the distinction of the most victories of any tennis coach in all of Minnesota. A true intellectual & only 70 years old.
You just gotta believe you will be fixed! It’s a miracle you got through the horrific effects of that concussion. You have a marvelous support system whereas some do not. Keep the faith!

  1. Hey Ian, We are with you all the way. You can beat this. BTW we just got a new toilet and it wasn’t that expensive and it will save money due to low water usage.

Seriously–thank you for sharing your journey. Here’s to hoping it will help others avoid getting skin cancer :-(.
Hang in there–lots are following and caring.

  3. I miss you and your wonderful weather wise ways! Stay strong and life is a journey and sometimes that side trip is not what we want in life but bumps happen. Hang in there and let the love of family and all of us get you through this. Can’t wait to see you back on the air…

  4. Good morning Ian,

I’ve been praying for the Lord to provide you with a full eight hours of deep sleep and to ease your pain.

I was thinking this morning that with this time off, maybe God is providing time for you to open the Bible and find out what he says about trials and challenges, asking for what you need, rejoicing in the face of trouble. He will bring you comfort and talk to you as you read His words. Trust me, “everything” is in there. Who else, other than family, can we run to?

God bless you and your family.

  5. You probably would prefer a polar plunge right now instead of this. Sending prayers your way for relief. Can’t they prescribe some sort of pain killer or sleep aid? Or would chemo interfere with them? As a kid back in the 50’s we used to fish on Cedar Lake in Annandale. My nose was like a roasted marshmallow with such a thick crust of burned skin sometimes. I have it checked annually by a Dermatologist. So far so good. Good luck and God bless you.

  7. I know it is easy to beat yourself up about using Hawaiian Tropic and Tanning Beds but I am 52 and we just didn’t know then what we know now. It reminds me of a line that Nancy Hicks-Gribble on King of the Hill said “The truth is like sunlight. People used to think it’s good for you”.

  8. Ian, you are quite a good writer. Hopefully this will help you process some of what you are experiencing. Can you use aloe or essential oils to reduce the burning? Thinking of you and your family.
